Ammonium sulphate is an essential mineral supplement for starting your aquaponic system. It initiates the nitrogen cycle by providing an ammonia source for nitrifying bacteria, even before fish are introduced. In closed-loop systems, this cycling stage is indispensable for creating a stable, healthy ecosystem.

Role in the system

The nitrogen cycle is at the heart of every aquaponic system. Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia (NH₃) into nitrites, then into nitrates that plants can absorb. Before introducing fish, the system must be "cycled" by providing an artificial ammonia source to allow bacterial colonies to develop. Ammonium sulphate fulfils precisely this role.

How to use

Add a first dose to the system on filling day, then a second dose 15 days later. Regularly check ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels with test strips. The cycle is complete when nitrites drop back to zero and nitrates appear. Fish can then be introduced. A 150 g sachet covers the complete cycling of a standard Myfood system.
