This biological treatment based on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a highly effective, targeted solution against caterpillars attacking your greenhouse crops. Unlike chemical insecticides, Bt works naturally by producing a protein that is specifically toxic to lepidoptera larvae, without affecting beneficial insects, fish or the balance of your aquaponic system. An ecological solution to protect your crops from caterpillar damage.
Product details
- Treatment based on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)
- Targeted action on caterpillars (lepidoptera larvae)
- Safe for fish, beneficial insects and the environment
- Compatible with aquaponics, bioponics and permaculture
Target pests & mode of action
Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that produces crystal proteins (Cry toxins) specifically toxic to caterpillar digestive systems. When caterpillars ingest treated leaves, the toxins destroy the gut lining, causing them to stop feeding within hours and die within 2 to 3 days. This biological mode of action is highly selective: it only affects lepidoptera larvae (cabbage moth, tomato moth, noctuid moths) and has no impact on other insects, fish or mammals. Bt is also effective against leaf-rolling caterpillars and borers that can damage stems and fruit.
Benefits
- Highly targeted: acts only on caterpillars, no harm to beneficial insects or pollinators
- 100% biological: naturally occurring bacterium, suitable for organic farming
- Fish-safe: no impact on aquaponic ecosystems or water quality
- Fast acting: caterpillars stop feeding within hours of ingestion
- No resistance build-up: biological mode of action unlike synthetic insecticides
How to use
Spray on affected foliage in the late afternoon or evening – Bt is sensitive to UV light and degrades in direct sunlight. Ensure thorough coverage of both sides of leaves, particularly the undersides where caterpillars tend to feed. Reapply after heavy rain or every 1 to 2 weeks in case of persistent infestation. For best results, apply when caterpillars are still small (early larval stages).
Important: Bt must be ingested by caterpillars to be effective – it does not work on contact. Ensure treated leaves are accessible to the pests.
Our quality commitments
