Potassium bicarbonate is an essential dual-function product for your crops in aquaponics and bioponics. It acts as a natural contact fungicide to protect your crops against common diseases, and as a pH regulator to keep your water in the optimal range. In closed-loop systems, pH tends to drop as the system produces, making regular correction necessary.

Role in the system

As a fungicide, potassium bicarbonate inhibits mycelium development and raises the pH on leaf surfaces, creating an environment hostile to pathogenic fungi (powdery mildew, downy mildew). As a pH regulator, it raises water pH when it drops too low – a common occurrence in actively producing aquaponic systems. It also provides a supplementary potassium input beneficial to plant nutrition.

How to use

As a fungicide: spray a diluted solution (5 to 10 g/L) directly on affected foliage. Reapply after rain or every 7 to 10 days as prevention.

As a pH regulator: gradually add small amounts to the system to raise pH. Check with test strips before and after each addition. A 1 kg sachet covers several months of pH management for a standard Myfood system.
