Ramial Chipped Wood (RCW) is a natural mulch made from shredded young hardwood branches. Used as a cover layer in your Myfood permaculture raised beds, planters or vegetable garden, it feeds the soil, retains moisture and stimulates microbial life – the foundations of fertile, living soil. A simple, effective way to improve your substrate quality season after season.

How it works

Unlike straw or bark mulch, RCW is specifically made from young branches rich in lignin, cellulose and nutrients. When spread on the soil surface, it is gradually broken down by soil fungi (white-rot fungi) and micro-organisms. This decomposition process creates stable humus – a long-lasting form of organic matter that dramatically improves soil structure, water retention and nutrient availability. The fungal activity triggered by RCW also builds a healthy mycorrhizal network that benefits your plant roots.

Usage & dosage

Spread a 3 to 5 cm layer on the surface of your permaculture raised beds. Do not mix into the substrate – RCW works best as a surface mulch where fungi can access it. Renew once or twice a year depending on decomposition rate. For best results, combine with vermicompost underneath the RCW layer for a rich, balanced and living soil. The 30 L bag covers approximately one Perma S raised bed (125 × 35 cm) or half a Perma M (125 × 65 cm).
